Starting in 1982, my career was originally based in the care and enabling field, primarily working with children and adults experiencing profound and complex disabilities. I qualified as a Registered Nurse, specialising in Learning Disability in 1990 and went on to manage residential and respite services within Islington Borough Council then 2 charitable organisations for people with special needs in North West London. A number of individuals I have worked with have, due to their own relatives' interest, had access to some form of holistic treatment and I became very interested in the often noticeable benefits for those people. Increasingly I also became aware of the huge number of people I worked with taking prescriptive drugs and the many side effects these seemed to cause, often requiring further medication simply to reduce these side effects as they could be quite debilitating in themselves.
After my children were born, various concerns over all our health and the limited types of treatments/approaches available on the NHS led me to begin exploring the differences between conventional and holistic approaches in more depth. I became particularly aware of the links between emotional and physical health and the lack of consideration often given to such, as well as the side effects of many prescriptive drugs, some of which were quite disturbing in their seriousness.
In 2001 I completed a 2 year course in Person Centred Therapy at Weald College in Harrow and my enthusiasm has snowballed ever since. I decided to spend the years as my children grew up, training alongside my care work for a new career in holistic therapies. I completed my Reiki I, II and Master Degrees by 2003 and have been a registered Reiki Master Teacher with Reiki Healers and Teachers Society since 2004. In 2006 I attained an ITEC diploma in Reflexology and in 2010 I graduated as a Homeopath after 4 years of training with The Contemporary College of Homoeopathy in Bristol.
As well as my work at Oak Practice, I am a student supervisor at the above College, and remain employed in the care field, currently working with elderly people and people with MS. My enthusiasm for working with people and having the privilege of sharing and being a part of their unique experience of life remains as strong as it has always been. Added to this now however, is my passion for sharing with others the insights I have gained regarding holistic health and approaches. Particularly ways to support our body’s own natural attempts to stay healthy, or to help it to recover from the illnesses, stresses and everyday challenges which throw us off balance.
