Swedish Massage

Swedish Massage

Massage - the manipulation of the soft tissue of the body - has been used as a healing therapy for many thousands of years. Records dating back to 2700 B.C. show that in China massage was used to treat paralysis, chills and fever. Hippocrates, the famous Greek physician writing in 400 B.C., recommended that physicians should treat sports and war injuries with massage and rubbing.

The ancient cultures of Japan, Egypt, Rome and Arabia all considered massage to be calming, soothing and relaxing, and also very important as a healing therapy. More recently modern massage was developed based on techniques originating in Sweden. Swedish massage involves a sequence of movements working superficially and deeper into the tissue layers. Now, in the 21st century we are again coming to appreciate the many benefits that massage therapy can offer to the young and the elderly, those with mental health issues, learning disabilities, the chronically ill and for general relaxation in an increasingly busy world.

Massage can help to ease the symptoms of stiff, tired joints, speed up digestion, improve circulation and muscle tone, flush out toxins and strengthen the body's resistance to disease, as well as promoting relaxation and improved sleep. It can improve body image, self-esteem and promote an overall sense of well-being. Massage also reduces anxiety and stress by relaxing the body and mind. Receiving a massage can provide a space in which to stop and let go, allowing for deep relaxation and rest. Through receiving regular massage we can create new habits of relaxation, and become more in touch with our bodies, enhancing self-awareness.

What to expect during a Massage session

At our first session I take a medical history from you, including any past and present illnesses, accidents, medication, allergies, diet and lifestyle. Then, together we will agree a treatment plan.

I will ask you to undress to your underwear (for women this includes removing your bra) and lie down on the massage couch. Towels will be placed over your body covering up any area of the body which is not currently being massaged. After the treatment I will give you some aftercare advice. Many reactions may be experienced after a massage but these are a positive result of the treatment. Massage makes the body's functions work more efficiently thereby speeding up waste removal and the elimination of toxins from the body.

Please allow up to an hour and a half for the first session, and approximately one hour for further treatments.
